HERTS - GENERAL

20. HERTS - GENERAL

A: Bishops Stortford - "In our area the only place that we have used is Hatfield Forest car-park, this is a National Trust property that has a large car-park and that has been used by us and others to watch and be watched."

B: Bushey - Small car-park off Warren Lane.

C: Hatfield - Galleria car-park.

D: Hemel Hempstead - "Follow the M11 from Hemel towards Hatfield. On the second roundabout there are two lay-bys on the Colney Road turnoff. Lots of cars (mainly gay) there most nights around kicking out time."

E: St Albans - "No man's Land common on the main road between St Albans and Wheathampstead is well worth a visit..." but: "...tried it, full of gays!"

F: Scratchwood - "Two sites, both located on the A1, just south of the roundabout with the A411. The A1 at this point is a three lane piece of road. The first site is located on the northbound A1 (going uphill away from London). Approx a quarter of a mile south of the roundabout with the A411 is an unmade car-park with a clubhouse of some description. We've only been there once. On our visit (2.00am), there were no couples around but plenty of gay/bi guys in cars. We're told that couples do get here, but are normally found at the other side of the A1." "Also try the parking areas on the A1 at Scratchwood (recently reported to be unlocked at night, AND to be 100% gay!)." And also (from Steve2): "...on the A1 between Stirling Corner and the A411 roundabout going north... ...about four hundred yards before the roundabout turn into picnic site... ...there's a cafe in there during the day time..." and: "...situated on the A1 going south towards London. Halfway down the hill (Mill Hill?). It's a car-park and picnic area. We're told that couples end up in the woods just over the field from the car-park. This car-park IS locked at times. On our visit, we couldn't see any other couples - just gay and bi guys in cars." "Couples tend to be on the path behind the cafe. Some good opportunities for watching and participating." "The one site I know of is on the A1 just in side the M25 at a place called Mill Hill. There is a picnic site that is good after dark." "Might be good after dark, but during the day it seems to be all gay/bi!" Sadly, though, Anita wrote in May 2000: "Do not go to Scratchwood at the moment the gypsies have moved in... ...will keep u up to date on it..." "A good place in that area would be Scratchwood Motorway Services. It's got a big car-park, with plenty of space well away from the buildings, over by the trees. I know it may sound busy, but it isn't at all, and quite a few people use it for this reason. It also makes it quite safe, because of the fact that it is a public area, and if you feel you want to leave, it's very easy to do so..."

G: Stanborough Park - Lisandy wrote (in March 2000): "Stanborough Park (Herts/Essex/North London) is off the A1(M) at the Hatfield/ Welwyn/Hertford exit. Follow signs to Welwyn. Two car-parks. Huge one on the right very busy on weekends. Car-park on left very busy during weeknights after 10.30pm and Thursdays after midnight seem to be quite popular in both car-parks. Must be a good night to get a babysitter. See ya there!"
